Hacking Google

Google Hacks lets you search in any one of 12 categories -- music, applications, video, books, lyrics, and others. But there's a catch. The searches are indexes -- Web site directories that haven't been protected. Translation: You have to sort through lists of files and some, if not most, could be unrelated to what you're searching for.
At the same time, you might hit the jackpot -- loads of files with just the content you're looking for. The showstopper is that the content belongs to someone else who doesn't know how to hide it from prying eyes. (And yes, I know, that person may have downloaded the music illegally as well.)

Boston Acoustics Makes HiFi iPod Speaker System

Boston Acoustics’ new Horizon i-DS2 iPod speaker system, shown at the just-wrapped up CEDIA EXPO in Denver, is now available north of the border for $199.99. The stylish system boasts dual, 3 ½” full-range speakers that supply 60 watts of power, and an acoustically-tuned chamber that the company says helps output “maximum bass response”.

Finished in either glossy black or white with a perforated metal front grille, the i-DS2 can also connect to other music players via an auxiliary input. The iPod dock also charges the player while it’s inserted. Using the included mini remote, you can control the iPod from afar.

It comes with a composite video output for watching videos from a video-capable iPod on a big-screen TV, and a USB port for connecting to a PC and playing back tunes from the iTunes music service.

Keen readers will recall the new “Play Smart” brand strategy and tagline that Boston Acoustics launched last year, and that focuses on appealing to the customizable look that consumers like, not just acoustic performance. Given this, the i-DS2 will, like all other products in the “Play Smart” Horizon line, feature interchangeable, coloured speaker grilles so that customers can match the system to the room’s decor.

SpeedFan Monitors Your Hardware, Controls Fans

Windows only: Free application SpeedFan monitors the fan speed, temperature, voltage, and more of the components inside your computer. That's all fine and dandy, but the marquee feature of SpeedFan is that you can actually adjust the speed of your fans by tweaking the desired temperatures on supported systems. Keep in mind that SpeedFan is a power-users tool, and the temp inside your computer isn't to be taken lightly. However, if you're comfortable tweaking hardware settings, an app like SpeedFan can help keep your computer running quieter and give you a little more control over what's happening with your computer's innards. If you've used SpeedFan in the past, share your experience in the comments. Mac users, check out previously mentioned smcFanControl.

New Gmail Labs Features Move Labels and Chat to the Right

Yet more Gmail Labs features arrive in your email account today: the ability to relocate your labels list and Gmail chat box to the right of your inbox instead of the left. If you've got a widescreen monitor and a long buddy list and/or label list like the developer, this relocation could cut down on scrolling time to get to your labels or chat. Hit the Labs tab in your Gmail account's Settings area to enable these and any of the other 22 experimental features now available.

VLC media player 0.9.2 released

VideoLAN just released VLC media player 0.9.2. VLC is probably the best known open source media player, and supports most audio/video formats without additional codecs. Before VLC, we usually installed buggy codec packs to watch videos in Winamp or Windows Media Player. We’ve found the nightly builds to be pretty stable for the past month, but it’s nice to see the final version released.

Download Squad gushed over the new interface design, but omitted the real change — VideoLAN switched from wxWidgets to the Qt toolkit. Among many changes, Qt allows video effects to be applied without restarting the media.

One of our favorite new features is an adjustments and effects menu for quick picture, sound, and subtitle tweaks. The new version has better support for flash videos (FLV), and will stream from most online video sharing sites. See the full changelog at the VideoLAN wiki, and help out if that’s your thing.

Put Your Photo in System Properties (XP, 2003, 2002)

What’s this? Is this a Photoshopped image? Nope. You can insert your own custom "builders" logo in Windows XP, 2000, 2003 server (and probably several other flavors of Windows all the way back to Windows NT 4.0) by doing the following:

1. Create a 180×144 image, save as oemlogo.bmp to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder.

2. Create a text file called oeminfo.ini save it to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder and have it contain the following information:

Manufacturer=Your name
Model=Your model

[Support Information]
Line1= line1
Line2= line2
Line3= line3

The support information text is what appears when you click on the "Support Information" button in System Properties. Not really necessary but you can put it there if you like.

If you build your own computers with XP this is a cool way to give it that extra custom touch. You can put your photo or company logo or whatever you like.

Microsoft Desktops Gives Windows Super-Simple Multiple Desktops

Windows only: Desktops, a new Vista-compatible 1.0 release from Microsoft's Sysinternals team, is a multi-desktop tool for Windows users who don't want, or can't afford the system resources for, a complete virtual desktop solution, such as VirtuaWin. Desktops simply asks you to assign universal shortcut keys for desktop switching between a maximum of four (Shift+Ctrl+F1, for example), and then nests in your system tray to offer thumbnail views and switching by clicking. One plus is that Desktops doesn't load new memory-hogging desktops until you create them. The big downsides are an inability to drag apps between desktops, along with incompatibility with some tools (Firefox, Launchy, and anything that doesn't like multiple instances, for that matter). So it's mostly a simple means of keeping full-screen email, browsers, office apps, and other programs separated, but it does that pretty well—with improvements, hopefully, to come. Desktops is a free download for Windows systems only.

Get Free Airport Wi-Fi with a Simple URL Hack

Blogger Felix Geisendorfer points out a clever URL hack that scored him free Wi-Fi at the Atlanta airport.
I found that I could easily visit sites like slashdot, Google, or even this weblog, when adding a ?.jpg at the end of the url. The next logical step was to automate that. I downloaded Greasemonkey and wrote a 4 line script that would add ?.jpg to every link in a document. That way I was able to browse most sites without a hassle.

This trick will only work on Wi-Fi networks that allow images to go through without a redirect, and though it may seem like a bit of a stretch, it's better than shelling out $7 for 30 minutes of Wi-Fi. Unfortunately the author didn't make the Greasemonkey script available, but even without it you could get in some decent browsing. The post isn't new, and I haven't tested this, so if you've ever used this trick or you're at an airport or Wi-Fi hotspot and can give it a try, let's hear how it worked for you in the comments. Photo by Jace.

World's Cheapest 64GB USB Stick Costs Only $111

For the world's cheapest man, we present the world's (supposedly) cheapest 64GB USB stick. It's assembled just for you out of the Netherlands, the place where quality (?) USB drives are made. You have the choice of brown or black, which makes perfect sense since this thing's made of leather, and nobody wants a purple leather USB drive. We're cheap, not animals. [Van Der Led]
