SideWinder X8 Wireless Mouse Runs Like a Rodent

The SideWinder X8 mouse from Microsoft operates on the 2.4 GHz wireless band, and offers up to 30 hours of use on a single charge of its internal battery. Geared toward gamers, it also boasts Microsoft’s BlueTrack technology that provides a fast frame rate of 13,000 frames-per-second,120” per second meximum speed, and 75g maximum acceleration, as well as a tracking range from 25 to 4,000 dots-per-inch (dpi).

Using the play and charge feature, you can plug the mouse in and continuing playing while its simultaneously charging up. The mouse’s scroll wheel has a tilt feature for better response when gaming, and vertical side buttons, located in such a way to reduce unintentional activation.

The mouse has its own LCD screen for viewing dpi settings and macro-recording icons. The Quick Launch button provides instant access to Microsoft’s PC gaming features. Features of the mouse are also customizable: one can switch between low, medium, and high sensitivity, and choose the ideal mouse feet for your preference. There are also seven programmable buttons on the mouse.

The SideWinder X8 mouse will be available in early 2009 for an ERP of US$99.95 (Canadian pricing has not yet been confirmed).

SpeedFan Monitors Your Hardware, Controls Fans

Windows only: Free application SpeedFan monitors the fan speed, temperature, voltage, and more of the components inside your computer. That's all fine and dandy, but the marquee feature of SpeedFan is that you can actually adjust the speed of your fans by tweaking the desired temperatures on supported systems. Keep in mind that SpeedFan is a power-users tool, and the temp inside your computer isn't to be taken lightly. However, if you're comfortable tweaking hardware settings, an app like SpeedFan can help keep your computer running quieter and give you a little more control over what's happening with your computer's innards. New Gmail Labs Features Move Labels and Chat to the Right

Yet more Gmail Labs features arrive in your email account today: the ability to relocate your labels list and Gmail chat box to the right of your inbox instead of the left. If you've got a widescreen monitor and a long buddy list and/or label list like the developer, this relocation could cut down on scrolling time to get to your labels or chat. Hit the Labs tab in your Gmail account's Settings area to enable these and any of the other 22 experimental features now available.

VLC media player 0.9.2 released

VideoLAN just released VLC media player 0.9.2. VLC is probably the best known open source media player, and supports most audio/video formats without additional codecs. Before VLC, we usually installed buggy codec packs to watch videos in Winamp or Windows Media Player. We’ve found the nightly builds to be pretty stable for the past month, but it’s nice to see the final version released.

Download Squad gushed over the new interface design, but omitted the real change — VideoLAN switched from wxWidgets to the Qt toolkit. Among many changes, Qt allows video effects to be applied without restarting the media.

One of our favorite new features is an adjustments and effects menu for quick picture, sound, and subtitle tweaks. Put Your Photo in System Properties (XP, 2003, 2002)

What’s this? Is this a Photoshopped image? Nope. You can insert your own custom "builders" logo in Windows XP, 2000, 2003 server (and probably several other flavors of Windows all the way back to Windows NT 4.0) by doing the following:

1. Create a 180×144 image, save as oemlogo.bmp to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder.

2. Create a text file called oeminfo.ini save it to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder and have it contain the following information:

[Support Information]
Line1= line1
Line2= line2
Line3= line3

The support information text is what appears when you click on the "Support Information" button in System Properties. Not really necessary but you can put it there if you like.

If you build your own computers with XP this is a cool way to give it that extra custom touch. You can put your photo or company logo or whatever you like.

Moving windows between desktops
